POULTRY SHOW.

FIRST AT TEMUKA. President —Mr T. Buxton; committee —Messrs A. Mahau, P. Acbeson, W. Goodman, H. Colvillc, W. McMillan, G. Childs, Highet, W. F. Evans, \V. Gurdler, J. Washington, E. Kadburnd, G. Brogden, C. Poultney, G. Henderson, and J), Rodgers. The newly formed Poultry Society at Temuka. is to be heartily congratulated on the success which attended its first show, which was held in the Volunteer Hall yesterday, under the best possible auspices. It is only a few weeks ago that the enthusiasts who were responsible for the exhibition of yesterday decided to promote it, an i the success achieved indicated that their efforts were both energetic and well directed. There were 493 entries, some coming from Christ-church and others from Oamaru. Timaru fanciers sent out over 100 entries, and they secured a good many prizes. From the point of quality the exhibits were excellent. There was a good collection of cats, and a first-rate show of dogs. In the class for roughcoated collie dog, Mr J. Thomson's Roslyn Reniel easily came first, and he was awarded the special prize for-the best dog in the show. in the songster section, Mr W. Holwell, of Timaru, did very well. Mr W. Errington, of Christchurch, was also very successful in the canary classes, while in the pigeon classes, another Christchurch man, Mr W. Fraser, gained a lot of awards. Mr S. It. Burns, president of the Timaru Poultry Society, took his now famous Minorca fowls out, and .was awarded first in each' class in which he showed, while Messrs W. J. and J. Thomson; of Timaru, were as usual to the fore with their line White Leghorns. They took the special prize for best White Leghorn cock in the show. Messrs Burns and Thomson also scored in some of the bantam classes, and Mr Burns took the special for best pullet in the show. Messrs S. B. Wightman and F. Tarbottom, two local exhibitors,. also annexed a fair share of these awards. Mr F. H. Palmer, of Washdyke. did well in Langshans, Mr F. Cl Hack, of Christchurch, in Wyandottes, and Mr W. Brown, of Temuka, in Orpingtons. There was a very creditable display jf cookery, it being apparent from this that the housewives of the Temuka district are by no means behind, in this important art. Of children's pets there was a nice collection, and altogether the show indicated that though this is the first it will not be the last. Tin? judges were—Poultry, Mr J. Condon, of Timaru; pigeons and canaries, Mr Jas. Thomson, Timaru; cats, Mr P. Warrington, Timaru; cookery, Mr T. Barr, Temuka; dogs, Mr J. Vde Beer, Ashburton. At 2 p.m. Mr Buxton, M.P., formally opened the show in a well-timed speech, in the course of which he cordially congratulated tiie Society on its first effort at holding such an exhibition, and wished the Society the best of prosperity in the future. The .show was well attended last night, and the committee hope to achieve what they deserve, financial success in their venture. The following is the r>rize list:— POULTRY.
