PROFESSIONAL CLUB

The first annual meeting of the South Canterbury Professional Athletic Club was to have been held on Thursday night, Cut owing to'the holidays and other causes, there was not a sufficiently large attendance to _ warrant the meeting being gone on with. The report for the year states that the club started with no capital, but on November 9 last it put before the public one of the best programmes of its kind ever arranged in the Dominion. The meeting was not well supported Tiowever, only £23 13s being taken at the grounds. This did not go very far towards meeting the expanses of the meeting, but Mr John Hole came forward in a very generous spirit aud helped the club out of its financial difeulty, and for this, every member was grateful to him. The club also desires to heartily thank Mr P. Foster (starter) Mr J P. Kalaugher (handicapper), Messrs 0. and W. Hall (race stewards,), Messrs F. C. Watson and J. O'Leary ft.imekeer>ers\ Messrs W. Taylor, A. J. Morris, J. Collins, and T. Armstrong (gate-keepers') and all others who had helned them in any way. From a sports nnint, of view the meeting had been a decided success. Some of the best runners in New Zealand competed and the times tbev rmt vn were a, credit to therri. ThV Fire Brio-ade also deserve credit for its splendid performance. Tn conclusion the report suggested that
