A "MARATHON" RACE.

TEN MILES AN HOUR. Per Press "Association. AUCKLAND, March 7. The New Zealand Marathon race, from Howick to Auckland, distance 13 miles, was run under the auspices of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club yesterday, in the hottest of . we.-uher. The event created tremendous inter j st, and should do much' to revive matcur athletics in, Auckland. Of the r irtytwo nominated, twenty-two started, including M. Dickson and E. \V. Shanahan (Christchurch), M. Mulcahy and F. Wilton (Wellington), S. W. Moore (Rakaia), Wreay (Ballarat, Vicand W. Wilshaw (Manchester, England). The road was dusty, with numbers of loose stones, and the presence of numerous vehicles on th:; road made the running unpleasant. The race was witnessed by thousands of people along the road, while at the domain, where the race finished, 5000 were present. Dickson, after leading for seven miles, laid down when still leading, finally finishing eighth. Moore at about this stage was replaced by Hill, an art college youth of 18, who went on and won' by less than ten inches from Moore, with L. J. Ormstein (Auckland) third, Rogers (Auckland) fourth, Shanahan fifth. Other southern - competitors to finish were Mulcahy tenth, Wilton fifteenth. Hill covered the distance in 1 hr 18 min, while the sixteenth man, the last to finish, came in 31 minutes later than Hill. The scene at the domain, when Hill and Moore were finishing, was one of indescribable excitement. In consequence of this race all cricket matches were postponed.
