VOLUNTEERING.
COMPULSOHY TRAINING. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Feb. 25. Out of the -420 boys at present attending the Auckland Grammar School, no fewer than 335 have joined the School Cadet Corps. In reporting this fact at the meeting of the Grammar School Board to-day, the headmaster suggested that the Government should uo approached with a view to compelling those boys who held junior and senior free places, to join the corps. It was their own laziness which kept the balance of the boys out, and he thought that in view of the fact that these boys received their secondary education free, they should do something for their country in return. He also thought that the junior masters who acted as instructors should receive special remuneration for their services. On the motion of Mr C. J. Parr, it was decided to refer the latter suggestion to the finance committee for favourable consideration. Mr Panthought that the Board should compel all the boys attending the school to join the" * Cadet Corps, unless they brought written advice from their parents saying that the youngster or youngsters in question had a conscientious aversion to military drill or discipline of any kind. It was resolved to issue instructions accordingly.
