BOWLING

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. The New Zealand bowling tournament was continued to-day in beautiful weather. The following are results of the day's play on the championship nnks final —Caledonian—(Foley, Bastings, Scott and Keast, skip.) 22, beat Victoria (Hatch, Guise, Redstone, Barry, skip.) 21. The quality of the play in this event completely justified expectations. The chances of Victoria securing the blue riband of the tournament were perhaps more fancied but on the other hand the Caledonian supporters who had seen Keast's play on the previous day. pinned their faith to him with confidence. At the 11th head the score was 16 to 7 in favour of Caledonian, the play being characterised by JVeast's magnificent drawing. Entering the 20th head Barry was five down and a great contest ensued, in the last head ilarry had to score three to draw or four to win. Both leads sent up good bowls and the second man for Victoria left two shots. The third men, Redstone and Scott, did not alter the head. The final shots by the skips were awaited with breatuless. interest by the crowd of spectators. Barry tried to draw another shot but his length was short. Keast followed and tried to put in a shot- with a firm draw. The bowl missed by the fraction of an inch and went to the back. With everything depending on his last shot Barry trieu another draw. The bowl came down in fine style and to the eyes of the spectators looked like a scorer. A gasp of relief from the Caledonian and a. sigh of disappointment from the Victorians went up as the bowl sailel harmlessly through a port out of the danger zone. The Caledonian skip and his team received the heartiest congratulations of the bowlers, while Bary was deservedly complimented on the splendid stand his rink made. Playing oft' for third place Clinton (Nelson, Hay, Rennie, and Sheddan, skip) 26, beat Cliristchurch (Scrivener, Seager, Dickson, McDougall, skip) 18. Doubles —Semi-finals.
