At present * there ; s considerable doubt as to the r«*al facts of the cace. but it- has hten gathered that on the trip over from Svdney trouble aru-*e amongst the pasA man named Williitfl -Lewis is alleged to have nb ained from, a young fellow passenger £ls by means of some card game, and the young man being under the opinion that he had been swindled, complained to his fellow passengers. When the v< esel reached Wellington £5 was returiiedj to the young man by Lewis, vrlioi it is said had an idea that he was likely to get into trouble over the affair.
After the passengers had come ashore Jackson met Lewis in' front of "the Post Office, Mid it is alleged witJi a,'view to seeing justice done to the young man, grabbed Lewis by the ve«t and demanded that he should refund the remaining £io. Sergeant Dale and Constable Flem'ng. who were in - the vicinity., came «p[ artd asked the two men to, go along to the jjolice station. They did so. and here Lewis had a warrant issued for Jackson's arrest on a charge of assault. The warrant was executed, and Jackson was immediately brought 'before Dr MeArthur. S.M., and charged with the offence alleged against him. He wa.< remanded until next morning, and in thfc meantime ha* been allowed lb s "having laid down a cash deposit of £5 as a bond for bis appearance before tie Magistrate next dav.
