In the fighting a b LTmrikilli the Mohmands lost 200. They exhibited desperate bravery.. Several wer e bayoneted at the British breastworks in a heavy duststorm. The presence of standing corn, greatly aided the Mohmands' sword rushes. . The fact that the Britfeh advance has been checked is encouraging the enemy to make fruitless night attacks. DELUDED TRIBESMEN. CALCUTTA, May 23. It is reported at Simla that the Mahmands and Khudakhels have forwarded'to the Ameer a petition to the effect that they attacked the British at the instance of frontier officials who now have deserted them. Unless helped quickly, they intend to transfer their country to Britain. The Afridis have written to a leading Mullah that they do not need any more; Mullahs to stir up trouble and then disavow and desterti them as in th e case of the Mohmands.
