WESLEY GUILD.

CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW. An annual chrysanthemum show ws.s instituted a year or two ago by the Ladies' Guild of Wesley Church, and the show for 1908 was opened in the Jackson Memorial Schoolroom yesterday, and will be continued to-day. The show when opened yesterday looked very pretty indeed. The arrangement is good, and there is plenty of colour and variety. Local exhibitors of show chrysanthemums are few in number, but a good many people were able to compete in some of the classes for outdoor growths. Mr C. S. Howard was the most liberal local contributor to the show bloom classes, ■especially in growing plants, and a row of a dozen or so. and a large group indicated some industry and care on his part. The staged group perhaps was rather dull, and would have looked better if relieved by some whites. Tbe majority of the cut blooms were furnished by Mr W. Bayliss, of Christchurch, whose exhibits were very fine, probably as fine as have' been seen in Timaru. The judges selected from among them a- " Lady Talbot" as the premier bloom, a fine deep, -dense, pale yellow, fine petalled bloom. Their selection wcs doubtless made on fixed " points," or it would have been difficult to made a selection at all. Decorative groujnngs nf sprays in bowls, vases and baskets, with a few beautiful foliage plants, fill up the cut flower stage, and make up a- fine bank of colour. There are twelve decorated tables, most of them quite nicely done. These are to be judged by popular vote. A novelty here is a class for decorated mantelpieces. The furnituure was borrowed from some friendly warehouseman, and a wide variety of tastes was shown in the "mode of decoration. Popular opinion seemed to favour one which the judges disqualified because it had too much stuff hanging below the shelf, suggestive of danger from fire—or cats. Tim hint should be mentally recorded for future i'se. In one of the class rooms a collection of vases and baskets arranged by children was set out, together with Mr Howard's large group of growing 'mums. Some extra exhibits helped to make up the total. Mrs G. Cross sent. a. table of flowers with a funeral wreath upon a decorated stand; Mr G. Smith, of Temuka, added a selection of good outdoor blooms, and Mr Howard a very nice collection of ..flowering and foliage pot plants, and there were a few other extras. A long stage in the hall was filled with fruit and vegetables. Mr J. E. Holdgate's grapes were tempting, and Messrs Butchere' and Holdgate's apples made a. fine show, their brilliant tints outshining those- of the dead-hueel "'mums." Mr P. G. Allen exhibited a large collection of catalogued varieties of apple? in the classroom. The vegetable collections . were good for this time of year and did credit to the growers. In the evening Mr Coomb?;' orchestra added the attraction of music, and the flowers looked. well .under the excellent lighting of the hall. The show will be opened again this afternoon at 2. and in the evening, wb-sn another musical programme will be added. Mrs- H. Kus.-:ell has been an. energetic secretary, and is to be congratulated on the result" of her canvass for exhibits. The judges were: For horticultural exhibits, Mr G. J. Seaiy and Mr Gebbie of Oamaru, and for the floral decorations Mesdaines Hope and Watson, of Temuka. The following is the prize list-:
