LOCAL INDUSTRIES.
THE QUESTION OF SHODDY. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, September 12. A deputation of men interested in the clothing trade waited upon Mr George Fowlds, M.H.R., in reference to the proposed legislation against the importation of material containing shoddy. •It was pointed out that if a duty was put upon goods containing what was known as shoddy it would increase the cost of living to those who were now able to buy a. cheaper class of clothing goods, and it was feared that there. would be many who would not be able to meet the increased cost. Mr Fowlds said it was not at all
likely that' any " shoddy Bill" would be passed this session, but an attempt was being made to increase the duty on nil woollen goods, mid' persons interested in
this movement were at present giving evidence before a committee which had been set up to deal with the whole question of local industries.
