FIRES.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, September 12. The Opotiki Hotel was destroyed by fire at 2 o'clock this morning. Several of the inmates had a narrow escape. A native girl descended by a ladder from the upper storey. Walter Martin, son of the licensee, received severe burns in falling through a floor which gave way under him. Mr Martin lost furniture valued at £IOOO, and stock worth £3OO. He was insured for "£ISOO, and it is believed the building was insured for £2OOO. The- building adjoining the hotel, occupied by Mr Platts and owned by Mr Heather, was totally destroyed, Mr Webb's building was partly damaged. Mr Platts estimates his loss at £SOO.
DUNEDIN, September 12.' By a fire at Roslyn on Saturday night two houses owned by Messrs I. H. Latimer and Christopher Moore were burned down, and another, ow«e<l by Mr R. Dawson. was damaged. The insurances were— Latimer, in tlie Standard office, £350 rn the house; in the United. £l5O on the furniture. Moore—ln the Standard. £2OO on the house; in the National, GIGO on the furniture. Dawson's house damaged to the extent of £l5O, and w\s insured in the Alliance for £250. The or 5 - gin of the fire is unknown.
