The Senate adopted' resolutions expressing indignation at the baseless charges against the army in South Africa and their Teadiness to give all requisite aid to the Empire. This statement was greeted with cheers excepting by Mr McGregor, ci South Australia, who protested against a continuance of the war. All the speeches ■were strongly patriotic. Subsequently Mr Pearce, Western Australia, presented a petition praying that the Australian contngents in South Africa s&ould be withdrawn. The petition, contained several allegations of cruelty against the British troops. Mr Neild ejaculated "wholesale lies." After a protest against it being read, the members received the petition in silence. Mr.O'Connor stated that the only reason why' Argentine meat was included in the War Office contracts was the prevalent possibility of— supplies being blocked in the event «f drought or famine in Australia. Received 1.21 a.m... January 25th. In the tariff debate, a proposal to place the linotype. moDoline, and kindred machinery on the free list is under discussion.
