ALLEGED SWINDLING.

"i During the past week or two it, has been freely rumoured that developments of a: sensational character "might be expected in connection with the local telegraph office, and further colour was given to these statements when it became known that on official, who had for many. years held a responsible position in the Department, had been suspended. It is now understood that he, with another person, will be charged at the Magistrates Court on Tuesday nest with having manipulated telegrams with the object of deilrauding a well known bdokmaking firm in Wellington. The rffence is said to have been committed on the Riccartot racecourse at the last Jiiiier'ng of the Canterbury Jockey Club, and crnsisted of sei.ding a telegram to the bookmakers, asking for a certain sum to bei pat ■•u j, horse which had just succeeded in winning c« race, and antedating the IcK'sjruir.. by half an hour.
