Shand, who acted as war respondent for New Zealand papers in the Transvaal, and is now on the "Star and Advertiser" editorial staff, has been elected captain of No. 1 Thames Volunteers. Deceased was 65 years of age. WELLINGTON, May 1. The Wellington Racing Club has decided to prosecute a number of bookmakers for trespass on the course at the autumn meeting. The comet is now visible here in the west between 5.30 and 6 o'clock in the evening. It has evidently swept round the sun since Sunday, when it was seen in the east in the morning. H.M.S. Archer arrived at 2.30 a.m., from Port Chalmers. The mails by the Sierra, which left Auckland on April 13th, arrived at San Francisco yesterday, one day late. Mr Seddon to-day was presented with congratulations from the heads o£ local bodies and business people upon the eighth anniversary of his Premiership. In reply, he declared his intention to retain his present position as long as he retained the confidence of the people. The Board agreed to spend up to £SO in entertaining children present at the reception of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. DUNEDIN, May 1. It was stated at a meeting of the City Council that the reserves committee has under consideration the question of the annual revaluation -of corporation tenants' leases ;also the conditions of leases.
