THE HOSPITAL ENQUIRY.

(By Telegraph. ) CHRISTCHURCH, June 7. The enquiry with reference to the management of the Christchurch Hospital commenced to-day before Dr Giles, Commissioner. About 50 people were present and several counsel were engaged on behalf of individuals and associations. Lengthy argument took place as to the scope of the enquiry and whether the Commissioner was authorised to subpoena witnesses. The Commissioner replied that he had that authority. Counsel for the associations said that the petitions sent m were not charges but merely matters for investigation. Dr Giles said that for the purposes of the enquiry he looked upon them m the light of charges against those responsible for the administration of the hospital. After certain preliminaries had been arranged the enquiry was adjourned till Monday.
