FOOTBALL.

TIMARU 2nd V. STAR Ist.

Considerable interest was taken in this match, as was evinced by a good attendance of the public, amon.g whom was a fair sprinkling of ladies. The game was a very even one, but on the whole in the forward department, the Star had a slight advantage. The back divisions of both teams were about on a nar, except |,hat several o.f the' Timaru men showed a good turn of. speed, and their smartness was ve,ry much apparent. P,lay was unmtere^tmg t\i~ $tye B.ta.rti scrums, short drjbbjing rushes, antj 'frequent'lying on jihe ball, being the rule. $lip game 'waxe4 rattier warm at the ejqse. 6f the. fi.r§t SP.elh and during some ]ine»out work in the Timaru 25, Bright cleverly obtained the ball and made a nice run, and passing in the nick of time to Larkin, enabled that player to draw first blood, somewhere about the corner flag. The kick at goal was a failure, and shortly afterwards half-time was ea|led. The second spell started more livelier, the passing and dribbling of both teaifla bein.g worth witnessing. Several nice runs were made on both sides by the backs, AH. Boys for Timaru making a sensational run more than half way up the field, but passing unselfishly to another player the latter was brought down by the full-back. The game at this juncture was exciting and getting near the close, when Boys from a pass by Jiapsey made another brilliant run from half way, and evading all the opposing backs geared right- behind the ijosts, Jleron placed an easy goal. Some more passing ensued, and the Star were endeavouring to regain lost ground but all to no purpose, and Lightband by a nice dribble scored the second try for I Timaru. The kick at goal though a good

one from near the line, was unsuccessful. After some uninteresting play time was called, with Timaru winning by 8 points (a goal and a try) to 3 points (a try). Mr J. Helean was referee and acted impartially to both teams, besides giving satisfaction to the spectators. We learn that the match will be played over again, as the Star entered a protest for breach of Rule 7 (junior flag competition), and the protest was sustained.
