COLONIAL Ist V. WAIHI 2nd.
The above match was played on the Waihi ground yesterday afternoon, and resulted in a draw. The weather was pleasant and the attendance good. Mr T. Hart made an excellent referee, giving satisfaction to both sides. In the first spell the Colonials liad the best of the game. Early in the game Shivtcliffe gained a mark, but Boys did not succeed in scoring. The Colonials had another easy chance of scoring from a free kick, but O'Callaghan failed to convert. The play was in the Waihi 26 for most of the spell, and some heavy scrums occupied a good deal of time, but no score was made. In the second spell the game was fast and exciting. The Waihi men played much better and several times came within an ace of scoring, but the defence was too good, and the game ended in a draw. The back play of the Colonials was extremely good, the clean way in which the ball was taken and a kick secured was a treat to see. The Waihi men were a good deal heavier than the visitors, but though they played very well at times they seemed to lack combination. The game was played in an excellent spirit, and the luck as well as the play seemed equally divided.
