WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of the Waimate County Council was held on Thursday last. There were present — Messrs Elworthy (chairman), Lyall, Hardie, Manchester, Morton, and Murphy. An apology for non-attendance was received from Mr Rhodes.. The following correspondence was read and considered : — From Mr £> r J,ack;s.cm, county clerk, teftderfagliis resignation, and stating that ma reason for doing so was that he had applied to the Council at last meeting for an increase of salary, and as the matter had been held over, he considered that the best thing he could do was to resign.— Mr Murphy moved •a resolution expressing regret that Mr Jackson had resigned, before the question of raising his salary had been discussed by the Council and requesting that Mr Jackson withhold his resignation until a fuller rneflt* ing. This was seconded by Mr Morton An amendment n^yed by Mrjtfanchestet an,d seconded by MrLyall '<That a\v Jackson's resignation be accepted with regret." After considerable -discussion, m whioh all the members expressed the opinion that Mr Jackson had been a good and able servant to the Council, the amendment was carried by 3 to 3. * The formal resolutions making the county and harbour rates were passed. From the Borough Council, asking the County to assist m maintaining the borough pound,— The application was not entertained. Mr Finlayson offered fa lease a piece of land along th> $leiphant Hill Creek. Mr 4. Pavia applied for the same piece of land.— -Neither application was entertained, and it was decided to call fov tenders for the land In question. From Mr Vincent, complaining that although he paid water rates he received none for his cattle. — The overseer was directed to report. From Mr J. W. White, solicitor, asking for a cheque for £40 18s 3d. taxed costs m the case Council v. McLean.— The cheque was passed for payment. From the Commissioner of Taxes, stating that he could not supply separate values of each section m VVaihao irrigation district owned by Mr Allan McLean, as his land is assessed m one area. JgFrom Mr Fqley, St. Andrew's, applying for drain pipes to be put m tne drain fronting his property.— The overseer was instructed to report. From Mr R. Simpson and other set-

tiers at Nukuroa settlement, asking the Council to metal the road leading to the settlement. — It was decided to re-form the road, and "to ultimately metal it. It was resolved to call for tenders for metalling Shearers' Road, a distance of 40 chains. With regard to the unemployed and Upper Waihao, it was resolved that the overseer be instructed to proceed with the work, and that it be done at schedule rates to be fixed by the overseer, and that Messrs Manchester, Cameron, Murphy and Morton be a committee to make arrangements. The chairman was empowered to interview the bank manager, with the object of making better terms for the overdraft. The following tenders for the various contracts were accepted : — No. 259, C. "Wilson, £22 10s ; No. 260, J. O'Donoghue, £30 10s 8d ; No. 261, R. White, £49 9s. The following accounts, amounting to £469 Is 6d general account, £12 7a 6d water-race, were passed for payment, and the Council rose.
