DEATH OF CONSTABLE HALLETT.

We regret to have to announce the somewhat sudden death of Constable Henry Hallett. The deceased officer complained on Thursday night of a slight attack of indigestion and that lie had not slept very well. Yesterday morning he felt giddy and unwell, but went on duty as usual from 9to 12. Between 12 and 1 o'clock he reported himself as sick, and went home complaining of a pain m his stomach. Dr Reid was called m and prescribed for him, but m the afternoon Constable Hallett became seriously ill, and died at five minutes to 7 o'clock last evening from failure of the heart's action, brought on by a severe attack of inflammation of the bowels. The deceased was well known here, where m addition to carrying out his duties under Sergeant Major-Macdonald he acted as inspector of wejglits and measures and factories, and was one of the truant officers of the Board of Education. Constable Hallett had led a very active life and hadseen a lot of varied service. He served m the navy m the Mediterranean as a boy, and had been 34 years m this colony, corning over from Victoria with Colonel Stack. He had served m the Second Waikato Regiment under Colonel HauU tain, and was through the Maori war. He joined the armed constabulary m 1866, $nd during his career had been m charge of some of the most important stations m the North Island. He wan for 10 years an active member of the police force of the colony coming into it from the A.C., and was universally liked by all his officers and comrades. In addition to hi 8 war decoration he also wore a good conduct medal. He carried out his duties m a painstaking and efficient manner, and was of a courteous and obliging disposition. Hard service m early life, no doubt left its mark on him and he died at a comparatively early age. He leaves a \v\fv and niue children, seven of whom are ait home. Th.ey are left none too well off, but amid the general regret and sadness caused at the sudden call, it is gratifying to be able to state that he had made some provision for those left behind by wisely insuring his life. The funeral will take place on Tuesday, and will we are pure, be attended by a great many friends.
