A curious theatrical centenary could (says a contemporary) be celebrated m Sydney next January, if anybody were enthusiastic enough to start the affair. This is no less than the centenary of the opening of the first Australian theatre. I The "theatre" m question was little more than a room, situated m the central portion of Castlereagh street. It cost over £100 to build, and the company was recruited from the more decent class of prisoners. The admission tariff was Is, but flowers, meat, or spirits to the J value of that amount were taken instead of cash. The theatre was opened on 16th January, 1706, under the management of John Sparrow, with the play of l ' The Revenge," followed by " The Hofel," an entertainment of songs and music.
