Arsenal was backed by the stable for twenty thousand pounds, but as his gallops did not pleasa a lot of money was hedged, and tho remainder was won against will. The horse had done badly at feeding, and three days before tho race had fasted for twenty hours. Arsenal had been backed for the double with Ben Bolt and Trident. Arsenal goes to Sydney immediately. Altogether the win wns a good one for the bookmakers, but had Trident won the ring would have been broken. The defoat of Malua, Ben Bolt, Meteor, and Hexham, greatly favoured them. Arsenal was bought as a yearling by Mr Pearson for £625, and was sold privately to Mr Gannon. Tlie liorso was bred in Reynold's stable in New South Wales. Trident was out of the race two furlongs from home. His Derby punishment settled his chance, although ho ran a great horse. Trenton and Silvermine also ran splendidly. Mr White for two years has obtained fourth place with Derby winners, namely, Trident and Nordcnfeldt.
