TIMARU CHESS CLUB.

The chess season in Timaru was brought to a close last week. Tho concluding handicap tournament, for a cup, the gift of Mr R. R. Taylor, the president of the Timaru Chess Club, wa3 very creditaUly won by Mr W. Hassell, who won nine out of thirteen games. Great credit is due to the handicapping committee for tho very keen contest, which will be seen from the following result : — Class Player Won Lost 1 W. J. Wood 7 0 2 W. Hassell 9 4 2 W. W. King 6 7 2 C. H. H. Clark 8 5 2 3. Edwards 5 8 2 W. E. Kinnerney 2 '> 3 P. Carroll 8 o 4 D. Virtue 3 10 Mi' Kinnerney did not compete in the second round. The handicaps were : — lst cla33 gives 2nd pawn and move, gives 3rd pawn and two moves, gives 4th kin? ; each class giving tho succeeding class the same odds. We might add that tho past season has been a most successful one, the club having played five matches, winning three. Two return matches have yet to be played.
