(By Telegraph.) Greymouth, Nov. Ist. Captain Bendall, surveyor for the underwriters, leaves Wellington to-day to roport upon tlie wreck of the Mawhera. The Union Co. are sending appliances sufficient to protect the hull from tho effects o£ the waves. When this is accomplished tho steamer will be placed on ways and launched into the river. Tho vessel has not altered her position since she went ashore except that she lies at a greater anglo to the sea. All tho cargo was landed in good condition early on Saturday afternoon except some kerosene on deck which was jettisoned. Tho crew and officers have left the vessel, and only a watchman is on board. Tho weather is very fine. Later. Tho preliminary' enquiry into the loss of the Mawhera commenced before the Collector of Customs and Mr Woon at 2 p.m. to-day, and continued until 10.30 to-night, with one hour's interval. About twelve witnesses were examined, aud voluminous evidence was t.iken. Itistha intention of tho Collector of Customs to apply to Government fur a formal investigation before a Resident Magistrate, and one or moro nautical assessor?. At a committee meeting of the Harbor Board to-day, it was resolved to ask Government to grant a magisterial euquiry into tho loss of the Mawhera.
