THE GREAT BARRIER MURDER.
ARREST OP A MAN SUPPOSED TO BE OAFFREY. (By Teleobaph.) Auckland, Oct. 4. The Evening Post to-night says : — " We understand that the police authorities have received a cable message from the Now South Wales police stating that a man answering to the portrait and description of Oaffrey, the Great Barrier murderer, haß been arrested. The man m custody has, however, on his breast some tattoo marks which are not noted m the description o£ Caffrey sent up by the New Zealand police, and it is quite possible they did not know of these. Caffrey's mnte, Ponn, has, it is believed, also been seen m New South Wales. It is supposed that the two men landed m New South Wales after abandoning the Sovereign of the Seas m such a position that sho would be wrecked and, create an impression that all bands had been drowned. Probably an officer will be sei t from Auckland to Sydney to see it the man m custody is really Caffrey. Superintendent Thomson has received no intelligence- as to the rumoured arrest of Caffrey.
