NEW ZEALAND WOOLGROWERS ASSOCIATION.
o (By Telegkaph.) CnnisTcutrncff, Oct. 4. Sir Julius Yogel has written to tho New Zealand Woolgrowers' Association here, m reply to a loiter embodying a suggestion, and tho Woolgrowera' Association of Victoria fo remit the customs duties on certain American production* m return for the admission of Australian wools into the United States, and urging the benefit of a Bimilnr arrangement m reference to this colony. Sir Julius doubts if Parlinment would agree to ropenl the duty on kerosene, especially as there seems to be a fair probability of its being obtained m large quantities m New Zealand, and considers this remission would not be of any use unless the duty on wool m tho United B tate* were to be simultaneously reduced. It would be oxtreme weakness to make the remission here unless under specific agreement that such iction would lead to the remission of the wool duty. Ho concludes— "The posi;ion then comes to this, that if tho United States Government wero empowered to enter into arrangements for reducing tho rates of duty on Australasian wools, would the colonies combined be prepared to consider tho question on the basis of mutual concession P To this I have no heßi- -' iation m replying that I consider thj3 importince of obtaining a market for colonial wools anreatricted by the present heavy duties is such that the colonies would readily endeavor to moot the views of the Government of tho United States upon any proposal of a mutually f sir nature." An attached memo from the secretary of the Department of Trade and jiiatoms, . states that tho duty collected on. kerosene for 1885 was £26,391, and for the iii years preceding, it avorsged £19,097 pet . : r»ar,
