Tho Government can cense to j provido present accommodation at terminus, where they aro treating you with great generosity. Clause 13 gives power to charge for use of land lines by terminal rates or otherwise, or we can leave you to collect your . own telegrams nnd moneys. We give you now, m every way, great aid, m fact virtually do the major portion of your business for you i saving you large expenses. We consider the intention of tho contract was that tho tariff i should not bo raised, and advise you to with- I draw your proposal." The following tele- : gram has been sent by tho Chairman of tho : Eastern Extension Australasia, and China Telegraph Company to Sir Julius Togel : — "London, September 28th— Hnve received your telegram. Aro acting upon highest legal advice, and hnvo a perfect right (o raise tariff. You are bound to givo us office accommodation for ten years from expiration of subsidy. New South Wales was prepared to renew subsidy for ten years. You obtained the sanction of your Parliament to renew for five yc.irj, but declined to carry it into effect. Thoadvantnges which you stitn we enj >y arc far from making up the heavy loss we sustain by working the traffic at present rates. There really ought to be no difficulty m coming to a satisfactory arrangement. You complain of not having received lrgnl notice. We have told you throughout our correspondence, extending over 18 months, that unless the subsidy was renewed the tariff would have to be raised. Now to prevent nil misunderstanding nnd to sntiefy the telegraph community of New Zoalnnd and of the other colonies tho company will postpone raising the tariff until Ist January next, if you choose to reconsider the proposals wiih a view to an amicable arrangement."
