The opening day of the G.R.C.*3 Spring meeting was favoured with glorious wentlier, bright nnd warm. Nevertheless, the prospect of a pleasant outing, with a day's racing thrown m, did not seem as attractive as might have been eipected, the gathering being very moderate. The usual professional attendants wore, of course, present m full force, but little straight-out betting was done, and even the totalisator figures show a scarcity of money on tho course. Tho sport was good, although tho fields were small. The courso was m good going order, but inclining rather to hardness. During the day tbo band of tho Geraldine Rifles was present, and played on the lawn m tho intervals between the races. As usual, the various events were got off with praiseworthy punctuality, the Geraldine- Club making a point of insisting upon that virtue. During the meeting both officials and jockoys wore crape, out of respect to tho memory of tho late Mr M. Sludholtne, judge, and Sir D. Mackenzie, handienpper to tho club. The totalise tor was under the charge of Messrs Mason and Roberts. Some time was wasted at the , start, Derwenter being very restless; his jockey, Clark, being subsequently reported for insubordination at the post. Ultimately the flag fell to a fafr start, tho five getting away m a bunch. Tai-antalus at once took a slight lead, Derwenter being close up. At the halfmile, Derwenter and Tarantalus wora still leading neck and neck, but hero Kingasl began to como up, ond Patrician stuck close to his heels, full of running. Coming round ■ the bend, Patrician challenged tho leader, ■ and passed Tarantalus. A slashing raco re- , suited between Derwenter and Patrician, it being neck and neck up the straight.
