REPORTED GOOD GOLDFIELD NEAR OAMARU.

♦ (By Telegraph.) Oamabu, July 27. It 19 atatpcl that gold m payable quantities has been found near Hanipden, about 25 miles south of Oamaru, on Mr Kitchener's run. Men havo been prospecting m tbo locality for some time. Steps are now being taken to have the locality declared a goldHeld. Last night's Oamaru Mail contained the following : — For some time there havo been current statements that gold had been found m the gullies near Hampden, but until lately nothing of a definite character could be gathered on the matter, though it waß wellknown that prospecting was being carried on m the neighbourhood of Hampden. We have now learned from a tolerably reliable source that gold has been found m payable quantities, bnt that the extent of alluvial country is limited, though it is stated that if tho auriferous country were thrown open a goodly number of men could make from 10s to 12s a day for somo time to come. As, however, the land upon which the gold has been found is private propery, the full extent of gold-bearing country cannot bo ascertained. The land where the gold lias been discovered is on the run of Mr Kitchener, and lies a short distance to the S.W. or W.B.W. of Hampden. Some little time since a meeting was held at Hampden m connection -with the matter, and a committee was elected to take stops to get the ground m question declared a goldfield ; but they do not seem to havo taken any active Btep up to the present, and are waiting, wo believe, to see whether tho proposed now Mining Art will facilitate matters.
