CORRESPONDENCE.
♦ THE PROPOSED OPIHI BRIDGE. . TO THE EDITOE OF THE TTMAKTJ HERALD. Sib, — As the Press is not represented at the meetings of the Levels Road Board, and all that appears m tho papers is just a meagre ' report from the minutes, I desire with your 1 permission to refer to the part of the petition ' of the Point ratepayers, published m your ■ issue of Mouday, which Btates that the exj penditure on the proposed bridge was to bo charged ogainst tho Point Ward only. I said ' that should the bridge be erected as at first ! proposed, the Point Ward would require b< j pay the wholo of tho board's share, not becaußO I thought it right that it should do ' so, but simply to carry out a rule that was m force when I became a member of the board : Two years ago, when I was olected, I was told that no moro than the rates raised m each | ward would be expended therein, no matter for what purpose. It came out prominently ' m reference to the main road from Timaru to ' Washdyke. It is well known that this road ' carries more traffic by a great deal than any 1 other road out of Timaru, to which traffic the Point Ward contributes to the full as much as the Seadown Ward, but not one penny : towards keeping it up. Because I urged the injustice of this I was considerably sat upon, j and was told distinctly that even if the main Opihi bridge on tho Temuka road required ' repairs (and the county council had it not m ' charge), the whole of such outlay would fall ' on tho litllo Seadown Ward. 1 When the matter of the proposed Opihi ' bridgo came up, I naturally enough concluded that what was sauco for tho goose was sauce . for the gander. I am, _c, [ Wm. Balpotje.
