THE PRESS OF INDIA ON THE HOME RULE BILL.

, While the native press, as may readily bo ! supposed, is full of admiration for the Irish legislation now m controversy, tho Anglo- ' Indian press has not a word to say m its ' favour. The Lahore paper says : — " Mr Gladstone's fulmination of a manifesto to tho voters of Midlothian looks very much as if he was bent on a dissolution of Parliament. The secession of his colleagues, the outspoken t opposition of the general public, the absolute } failure to conciliate tho least section of bis adversaries, and the lukewarm support of those who are still his friends, all this is scarcely , compensated by such sympathy as is offered by America and the Colonies —by Mr O'Donovan Roßsa we presume, of New York, and tho rowdier element of Australian society. Mr. Gladstone was never celebrated for bearing a reverse with equanimity — a faculty which, to a statesman is no less valuable than moderation m the hour of victory. The almost feminine irritability which Mr. Gladstone has displayed before now, when he has found the control of events passing away from his hands, ' will most likely master his reason once more. Indications of intense m ntal excitement aro plainly visible m the threat that England may be compelled to yield, hereafter, to terror that ' which she is unwilling to concede now to what ' Mr. Gladstone, perhaps is plea»ed to call ' reason. Not that Router's summary of tho ' manifesto mentions reason m any way. Menj ace and denunciation are the forms of logic ! employed ; and we have the Prime Minister of England descending to use the artifices of the Moonlighter. The familiar suggestion that matters may yet be arranged, puts the whole ' transaction on a perfect level with the practices of the professional extortioner."
