POLITICAL NEWS.
(By Telegraph.) (fbom our own correspondent.) Wellington, Sept. 7There were several meetings of Canterbury members to-day, m reference to the East and West Coast railway question. At the first meeting it was announced that tho Government had declined to make the construction of tho railway a Ministerial question, and the meeting then adjourned to consider the position, and a further one was held during the afternoon. It was of a private nature, and those present aro exceedingly reticent as to what took place. I believe tho meeting to-day was perfectly indefinite, and that no determination was come to. Borne of tho most violent of tho members blustered a little, but the tendency of the majority is not to inßist upon tho railway being made a Ministerial question. As a matter of fact they have evcrj thing to gain from tlie present Government, as they could not possibly expect to fare as well with any other. Thero is now moro prospect of a peaceful end to the session, though thero will possibly be a rumpus over the different votes when the Public Works Estimutes come on to-morrow night. It is also expected thero will be further trouble over the San Francisco mail sorvico upon the subject being further considered on Wednesday next.
