TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

Tho usual monthly meeting of the Tomuka Road Board was held m the Board's oflices, Temuka, on Tuesday. MHMBEHS PRESENT. Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), R. Smith, J. T. M. Hayhurst, J. Brown and M. Quinn. ACCOUNTS. Tho minutes of the previous meeting having been read nnd confirmed, accounts to the amount of £56 were considered and passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and considered : — From Sir C. Griffiths, drawing attention to an opeu draiu running south of the Orari railway station, and asking that a bridgo or culvert should be erected to allow of traffic crossing. The Overseer was directed to examine and report on the same at next meeting. From Mr A. Clyno, asking for thn drain running m front of his land to be cleaned, and offering to defray shnre of cost ; also requesting a grant of sufficient pipes for a crossing. Resolved — " That the pipes be granted, nnd the Bonrd deems it unnecessary to interfere with the drain nt present." From Mr Owen Carr, asking permission to erect a slip pnnnl across John street m like manner to Mr Douglas. Resolved — " That the application be granted, subject to being revoked at any timo the Board may think fit." From Mr T. Palmer, drawing attention to the inconvenience felt owing to tho footI bridge near his pluco having been washed away. 'lhe Overseer having laid on tbe table plans ancl an estimate of the cheapest mode of re-erecting a bridge, thc Bourd decided thnt as the oilvnntnges to be gained by a footbridge would be very sniall, considering the expense, declined the application. From Mr C. Eichbnum, asking for his name to be taken off the rate roll m respect to certain land, and that of Mr A. Grant inserted m its place. It was decided that the alteration bo made m the future roll if Mr Grant agrees. From Mr Wm. Palmer, asking the Board to cut a drum from Greenawny's creek to Cooper's creek to prevent water overflowing his land. Resolved — " That the request be not granted, as tho proposed drain would divert tho water from its natural courso." From the Property Tox Commissioner, asking for information as to the total rateable value of the district, exclusive of Crown and native lands. — Tho Clerk stated he had complied with the request. From tho Hon. Mr Bolleston and the Native Department, forwarding information re Georgetown Rond. From Mr W. McLeod, drawiug attention to the stato of tho drain along tbe road leading to Rangitata. — The Overseer said the work hnd been attended to. From Mr Georgo Edgier, asking tho Board to open Prince street from Sodtown to Arowhenua, nnd hn olso called the Board's ottcntion to roads being obstructed. — The Overseer was directed to visit and report at next meeting. From tho Geraldine County Council, stating the Temuka Rond Board could take ns much of the old timber from the Temnka bridgo, for patching any Council works m the district, as tliey required und nlso recommending periodical inspection and cleaning of the bridges. It was decided that the Council be informed thot the Board will purchase tho old timber ot the samo price as poid previously, oncl that they would charge the Council the same rate for timber used m repairing County bridges, and also that existing bridges will lio regularly inspected and cleaned. From the Geraldine Road Board, listing the Board to reconsider their decision re proposal made by the former Board m the matter of thc maintenance of the Boundary road. Resolved — " Thnt tho Gernlcline Roacl Board bo asked to amend their proposal so as to rend, ' Thnt any work requiring nn expenditure of nbovo £20, should be first sanctioned by both Boards, and (lint thc total expenditure by cither Board for o year shall not, exceed £100, outside such works as may have bcs.'n sancti ned.' " overseer's report. The Overseer's report was read as follows : — " Tondcrs havo been called for the following works :— Shingling Kakahu and Boiling Down roads, forming footpath Denmark street, Rangitata fords and shingling Rongitota. Contract No. 37, cleaning canal drain, hns beon completed ond passed for payment. " During the past montii EOvcrnl Bmall works that were neoossary have been clone, and a pipo culvert has been put m near tho Waitohi school, to replaco o wooden ono that wns unsafe I have had some shinglo cartod on to tho canal ioad near Greenawny's. "Tho worst plnco on tho Bangitata school roacl hos boon formed, and furrows ploughed across the plains to Hawke's road. The culvert on tho Waitohi and Point road, for which tenderß wero called last January, requires to bo put m. The road at the bottom of tho cutting near tho Rangitira creek, on tho Rangitira Valley road, badly requires repairing, nnd o pipo culvert ought to bo put across it. The willows nt the Tomuka bridge should bo foncod, and thoso ncor the bridgo cut down. " I havo prepored a list of tho roods which aro most m need of shingling, ond on estimate of tho cost of somo, and I havo made enquiries as to tho cost of a beam thot would connect tho footbridge at Palmer's road with tho bank. " I havo, &c, "F. Archer." MISCELLANEOUS. Tho following resolutions wero passed on the roport : — " That tho culvert bo put m ot Waitohi, and the Point Rood near Rangitira creok bo repaired." " That somo of the willows bo cut ond sold ot a fair rate to anyono who moy require thorn." In accorclanco with a resolution of tho Board, passed at last meeting, tho Overseer submitted a list of tho roads requiring attention and on estimate of the coat. It wns decided that tho works bo carried out. with somo Blight modification ; tenders to bo colled for tho following portion by noxt Bonrd dny : — Tho Main Waitohi Rond, Middlo Swamp Road, North Town Bolt, anil Upper Swamp Rond. Tho Clerk having laid upon tho tablo on cstiuinto of tho proboblo receipts for the jear, the samo wns considered, ond the Clerk wns direotod to odvortiso that nil outstanding rates for 1883-4-5 would bo immediately mcd for without regnrd to thc smallncss of any porson's rato. TENDERS. Tho following tenders were accepted : — Contract 38 — M. Dunn, Is Old per yard ; contract 39— M. Dunn, ls OJrl per ynrd j contract tl— W. Lowis, £7 6s 2d ; Contract 42— M. Shoohnii, £24.
