At the Supreme Court this morning an action against the Government m respect to land taken up for a battery site was adjourned for a week pending tho receipt of the lately passed Public Works Act Amendment Bill. Judge Gillies said the theory, of course, »ns that upon tho Act passing at Wellington it inßtantly passed also m all judicial minds upon tbo Bench. Tho Government, however, had no method of applying judicial minds so as to make themselves instantaneously conversant with laws which wore pnssed. A sample of Coromandvl lead is to be sent to Spain nnd Wales to bo tested. Arthur Cox died yesterday at the hospital from injuries caused by a kick m the loins, sustained whilo playing football at Te Kopuru. The blow caused so little immediate inconvenience that Cox resumed play. Iho injury, however, resulted m gangrone m the bowels, which resulted fatally. Mr Cox was 26 years of age. Wellington, August 3. Mrs Assessor and her son, who were lost m the Maurice ville Bush since Monday last, have been found. They had no food for four days and suffered very severely from exposure. The premises of J. E. Kupton, storekeeper, Greytown, were destroyed by firo at 3.30 on Sunday morning. The insurances were : — On the building, £300 m tho National ; on the stock, £1000 m the South British, £500 m the National, £500 m tho Australian Insurance Company, and m the London, Liverpool and Globe, £200. The total loss is estimated at £1000 above the insurance. A row occurred about midnight on Saturday between sailors belonging to tho steamer Bimutaka and the barque Ganges and some shoro hands, during which a Lascar belonging to the Ganges received a blow on the head with a broomstick which rendered him unconscious for some hours. He was taken to the Hospital where it was found he had a sprained shoulder and a nasty wound on the bead. Two of tho shoro hands were arrested and tho others went away by tho Bimutaka. The men will be tried on Wednesday. The attendance at the Exhibition to-day was not large, and m tho afternoon tho Band concert was very poorly attended. A largo number of exhibits camo to hand to-day, and are now being opened up. Bain has again set m. A heavy southerly gale liaa been blowing all day. The scu at tho Heads is heavier than it has been seen for tho lost twelve months. The captain of the Wareatea on entering the Heads had to adopt the precaution of pouring oil over the vessel's stern to moderate tho waves, which threatened to poop her. Tho first examination of officers m the Volunteer and Militia forces took place throughout tho colony to-day. Eleven candidates presented themselves m Wellington. The ticket office at tho Carterton railway station was burglariously entered into on Saturday night, and £16 abstracted. Cdbibtchukch, August 3. Messrs Hebden and Cooper, who sustained serious injuries from a coach accident on July 22nd aro still m a critical state. Mr Cooper's recovery is regarded as hopeless. Mr Hobden has beon delirious for tho past three days and fears aro entertained that he will succumb. DnfEDIN, August 3. A young man who on a charge of assaulting a Chinaman last week govo evidence for the defence m which ho admitted that he had struck the Chinaman for the sake of amusement was to-day fined £3 m all, or 21 days' imprisonment. A prisoner named Fisher, recontly sentonced for horde-stealing, was to-day brought up on four charges of prison insubordination, and was sentenced to 60 dsys m irons. W. Arthur, Chief Survoyor, died to-dny from a cold caught about a "week ago. He was at one time Provincial Engineer, and has acted for a number of years as Secretary to the Acclimatisation Society, m which lie took great interest. Ho leaves a wife and fivo children. iNVEncAuoiLij, August 3. Stephen S. Hutchison, gas engineer, of Dunedin, was to day brought beforo tho R.M. on a warrant issued by a Duucdin J.P., on tho information of one of Hutchison's sureties, who declared ho had reason to suspect he has about to abscond for the purpose of evading justice. Mr Wade, for tho accused, held that tho warrant was bad, as thorc was nothing to show it waa signed by a Justice of tho Peaco m this colony. Ho contended tho words "threo last months" should have been added. The Court determined to act on the warrant, when counsel raised the point that tho Magistrate had no jurisdiction, as the Justico of tho Poaco Act provided that m such cases a porson arrested should only be brought bofore tho Justico issuing tho warrant. Tho Court took tho samo view, nnd said tho police should havo taken Hutchison to Dunedin. Inspector Buckley eaid that would bo done. Bail wns refused. It wns said that tho accused had neither tho wish nor means to leavo tho colony.
