THE RAILWAY TARIFF.
TO THB EDITOR OF THE TIMAHTT HEBALD. Sib, — It is becoming evideut that the iniquitous grain tariff, which has been in force in South Canterbury for the past twelve months, is to be continued over another grain season, and this after all the remonstrances on the subject by the Chambers of Commerce of Dunedin, Oamaru and Timaru ; and after all the promises of the Governmeut to adopt an uniform tariff for the colony. When Mr Macandrew was in Tinoaru, some time ago, he informed the Chamber that this uniform tariff had been gazetted, and would come into force on the Ist of January. The Ist of January has passed, and the tariff is not. yet even gazetted. When it will couie into force is then-fore uncertain. It, is to be hoped our Chamber of Commerce, at their next meeting, will frame strong remonstrances to the Government on this subject, and insist on this matter being set right at once. I am, &c, Luke Shabpe.
