Mr Hawkins, solicitor, appeared on behalf of the prisoner, who pleaded guilty to the charge. ; . Mr Hawkins pleaded for a mitigated punishment as the prisoner was only fourteen years of age, arid the son of a respectable woman m Oamaru, the lad's father being dead for some time. The prisoner was sentenced to receive twelve cuts with a cane on the hand, and, as he had been m custody for eight days, was ordered to be discharged on the infliction of the punuhment. TRESPASS. W. A. Gregson, for allowing cattle to wander on a public thoroughfare, was fined ss. » M. Buckingham was charged with the larceny of a case of whiskey, value £2 19s. Mr White for defendant. . ' ' W. Freeman with obtaining money by false pretences, prisoner having induced the' prosecutor to endorse a. cheque of the former's drawing, for .the , adm' of £10, th- pretence being that the prisoner had sufficient funds, to meet it m the Bank of New Zealand at Tapanui. .
