8.30 the men went to the ground. The weather was all that could be desired, and it good many spectators, including marry ladies, availed themselves of the fine afteriiO3ii to see the game, The ball was kicked off by Fraser, for Timaru, at 2.55, but was returned back by '.he local team, whose forwards ware soon on it, and pressed Timaru so hard that they had to forco it dowu. The ball was again put m play, but it was evident that the Temuka men were far too heavy, as force-downs followed m qnk-k succession, and G. Potta, by a good run and a splendid kick, obtained a goal. Soon after this, time was called, and upon the the ball beiug again kicked off for the second twenty minutes, the result was juit the fame, the ball being the whole time close to tho Timaru goal, and force and touch-downs followed m quick succession. Aft«r one of the touohdowm the kiok was entrusted to B. Smith, and by a very good kick h» obtained another goal. In the third twenty minutes Timaru seemed to be determined to do something, but notwithstanding"repeated dashes made by Craig and Pickering the homo team continued scoring, and James Paterson, by a good run, obtained a touch down, which resulted m a good kicked goal by Donald Potti. The game now became rather more lively, as the Timaru men were getting warm, and they for about ten minutes kept the ball uncomfortably close to the home team's goal, where hot scrimmages ensued. The ball at last was got behind, and Barker, trying to save a force down-, was charged., and lost the ball, when Craig, who wa< backing up, got it, and scored a touch down to Timaru. This enlivened the foreign team, but although they foughtbard and well afterwards, they did not obtain another point, and at 4.40 time was called, the acoro being — Temuka. 18 force downs, 10 touch downs and three goals to one touch down (or three points). The Timnru men were very light, but played pluckily, and with a 'little practice would be able to give the Temuka team all their work. For Timaru, Eraser, Craig, and Pickering, as ' forwards, were always conspicuous, and Jones' play, as back, was admirable. The Temuka men all played m their usual style, and we think it would be very hard to define any of them, but they had the tame failing as they always hive — the back play was not good, and the sicking only moderate. There will be a practice on the Temuka ground at 3 o'clock on' Saturday next, when all members who possibly can ought to turn up, as the local team go to Christchurch on the 14th proximo to play the return match.
