Wellington, 1 *ctober 18. At 2.30 this morning a woman named Ellen Blake was arrested at her residence, Frederick street, on a charge of attempting to murder her husband, Jos. Blake, by administering poison. Blake, who is an old man of 7ft yeurs of age, has been removed to the Hospital, and is in a oritical state.

For some time Blake has been under medical treatment, suffering from stricture, for which he was using mercurial ointment. Ho was in the Hospital and recovered, but a week or two ago he was seized with illness, which kd symptoms of goneral debility. A diagnosis of the case, howover, lod the medical men to suspect the proseiico of poisou. It was suggested that this might have been caused by the ointment which Blake had bneti nsing, but enquiries on tho part of tho polico resulted last night in the arrest of Mrs Rlake.

It is suspectod that the poison used was calomel, Some of this drug was found in a purse or, bag belonging to Mrs Blake.

Her husband was removed to the Hospital. Blake is . believed to be a remittance man'in receipt of money regularly from a relative at Home.

The woman now in custody is his second wife, fho is about 50 yours of age. Blako lies in a critical condition at the Hospital. For some time the medical gontleman attending him bad a suspicion that ho was suffering from poison, and on his complaining that tho medicine had hot beeu administered to the patient Mrs Blake changed the doctor. The new attendant held the same opinion, and late last evening the police woro (informed. At midnight tho Inspector and a deotivo visited the accused's home, and took her into custody. Calomel was the poison nsed, and the police are endeavouring to ascertain where it was purchased. Blake is in receipt of remittances from his brother in England. Mrs Blake was chargod this morning with attempted murdor, and remanded until the 27th, Bail was refused.
