THE LICENSING ELECTIONS.

Auckland, Thursday. There has been a great fight over the licensing elections in the city wards today between the moderate ticket and the temperance ticket. In the North Ward there ; were elected 4 on the temperance and 1 on the moderate ticket; in the South Ward, 3 moderates and two temperance ; in the East Ward, the same as the South. The Grafton Ward candidates were all on the temperanco ticket. The result iB considered a victory for the moderate ticket, a& the contest was really in the South, East, and North Wards. Tnd following are four of the names on the moderate ticket for Archill, viz,, Chapman, Edgar, Taylor, and Jones. Chhistohoroh, Thursday. The first Licensing Committee election for the city took place to-day, resulting in the complete defeat of the temperance candidates, the old committee being returned by a majority of nearly 3to 1. At St. Alban's 4 of the temperance men were returned. The temperanco party made a demonstration to-night, parading the streets with torches, bands, and banners, and finishing with a mass meeting in the Theatre Royal. Wellington, Thursday.

At the licensing election to-day the temperance party gained the day in Cook Ward ; the publicans in Te Aro and Lambton, and the moderate party in Thornton.
