VOLUNTEER INSPECTIONS.

THAMES NAVAL ARTILLERY.

The Naval Artillery held their monthly inspection last night, when there were present 60 of all ranks—l Captain, 1 Lieutenant, 1 C.P.0., 4 first class P.O.'s,

3 second class P.O.'s, 1 bugler, and 49 gunners. The inspecting officer. (Captain Wildman) stated that he was much pleased with the steadiness of the men, and with the state of the arms and accoutrements. Several ladies were present to witness the presentation of prizes, which was made by Mrs M. H. Payne, who most kindly and appropriately addressed each of the winners, whose names were given in Monday's issue, the tie between P.O. Preece and Gunner Brownlow having been decided, and the latter being successful. The Captain thaDked Mrs Payne and the other ladies for their kindness in being present, on which three hearty cheers were given by the company, and three more for Mr Symington and the other donors of prizes.. After a march out under Lieut. Potts, final arrangements were made re the Association representatives, who will leave on Monday next, and we understand that they will be followed by Captain Wildman if pending engagements will allow.

THAMES RIFLE RANGERS. The company paraded last night for inspection at,-., their drill-shed, Shortland There was a good muster of 3 officers, 4 sergeants, 4 ; corporals, i bugler, and 40 privates. The inspection was made by Capt. Lucas, who complimented the men on the improvement,in the state of their arms and accoutrements, after which the | company was exercised in rifle and company drill by Lieuts. Mayo and Scott respectively. At the conclusion of the parade the following prizes were presented, : - Corp) Thomas, Mr Comer's prize, a calf; .Vol. Clout, f chest tea, presented by Mr McGowan; and Oorpl. Inglis, { A uckland Herald, presented by Mr Aickin; Vol. Climo, Mr Foy's, prize. Mr Symington attended and presented a medal to Capt. Lucas, which he had won twice in succession. Lieut. Mayo thanked Mr Symington on behalf of the company, and called for a vote of thanks, which was enthusiastically responded to, and Mr Symington was unanimously elected a life honorary member of the company.
