INCOME TAX FREEDOM.

COMMERCIAL MEN OPPOSED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 19. ' The following motion was passed by the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce to-day : “That this chamber has noticed with regret and concern the recent decision of the Goverun eut to exempt , from income tax salaries of members of Parliament and other public officers, and is of opinion that ;t is a dangerous precedent and unnecessary; and this chamber trusts that the decision will bo repealed and liability for income tax taken into consideration when fixing the amount of remuneration.”

The mover pointed out that a grave precedent was proposed to be set up by Parliament, in that it might bo the thin edge of a wedge towards exemption for the whole of the civil service. His proposal did not mean to infer tint members were paid a sufficient salary, but that tho chamber, as business men, were opposed to anyone being exempted from the payment of income tax.
