THE PROHIBITION VOTE.
IMITATION BALLOT PAPERS. Per Press Association. 1 AUCKLAND, June 13. Tho distribution of small cards, alleged to have been printed in imitation ol r licensing ballot papers showing the bottom lino struck out, used outside the booths at tho licensing elections in April last, resulted in a number of people being charged at the Magistrate’s Court this niorning. Mr. Hackett appeared for all the defendants. Tho 'facts generally were agreed upon between counsel for the defence and the prosecution. It was shown that tho defendants had been at several booths around the city, where they had used small cards in giving voters their numbers 1 from tho electoral roll. Tho practice was to write tho number on tho hack of the card and hand it to the voter.
The Magistrate said there'was no doubt about the law under the Legislature Act, and that an offence had been committed. Those who had committed tho broach under this Act would be fined £3 each and costs. With regard to the charge under the Printers and Newspapers Registration Act, decision would bo reserved, in order that legal argument may be heard.
