SUCCESSFUL GARDEN PARTY.

IN AID OF ST. MARY’S CHURCH funds. “Dunure,” Avenue Road, tHe beaxitifui residence of Dr. L. A. Yalkei, was on Saturday afternoon the of a most enjoyable and successful gulden na-rty, the object ot winch m» to assist the effort towards paying off the debt on St. Mary’s Church. I here was a very large attendance, among the number being his Fordslnp Bishop erill and Mrs. Avenll, the Yen. Aiehdeacon and Mrs. 1 - 0. Evano. and sA-cral returned soldiers from the hospital. The arrangements had been careful!v planned by Mrs. Malker, and the result was that one and all spent a thoroughly jolly time. the gardons, so charmingly laid out, and senting at the present time a. dazzling combination of colour and beauty proved an irresistible attraction.to the visitors. Particularly pleasing were the bright masses of dainty rammer roses .clustered in profusion on then punga supports. The pergolas of Dorothy Perkins, Lady Day, and the salmontinted Dorothy Dennison were the objects of special admiration. Glorious, too. was tho display ms-do by the -long row of sweet peas, of every tint and line imaginable. A lovely, eool walk tlij&fmgll an avenue of macrocarpa trees was another source of delight. The various lawns were all in excellent condition. A number of tennis-players enjoyed some good gamps, and croquet competitions were also played, under the management of Mrs. D. K. Morrison and Miss Norman. Mrs. Oldham and Miss Percy Smith won the golf croquet competition, and Mrs. Clarke was the winner of tho bagatelle competition. Afternoon tea was served in front of the house, under an awning, stretching from the balcony to the lawn. The assistants included 1 Mrs. C. Gray, Misses AV. Webster, F. Winfield, H, Outfield, K. Leathain" B. Matthews. M. Roy, L. Whitcombe, A. Wilson, and W. Crooke. Ice creams were dispensed by Miss M'Lean and Miss Cliff. A really splendid programme of music was played by the Citizens’ Junior Band, under the baton of Mr. F. AY. G. M’Leod. ihe selections comprised popular airs, patriotic items, and light dance music, the lads acquitting themselves extremely creditably, and quite a number ot people present complimented tho conductor on tho progress made and standard attained. The members of the band were entertained to afternoon tea by Mrs. Walker. Unaccompanied vocal items hv a. quartette of members of -St. Mary’s choir—Mrs. Wilkes, Miss Hine, Mr. Webber and Mr. Benaud—■wore rendered in a finished maimer, and were greatly appreciated. Altogether the function was a complete success in every way. Mrs. Walker had' tho satisfaction of handing in a cheque for £2B 3s at the morning service on Sunday, the amount including the band’s fee, £3 3s, which was generously returned by thorn as a donation. Residents will welcome the announcement that for a. small charge, which will be sent on to St. Mary’s Homes, .Otahuhu. the gardens may be viewed by the public. Those who are able to should avail themselves of the opportunity thus presented.
