NAVAL DEFENCE.
GUARDING THE PACIFIC. DUTY OF THE DOMINIONS. DT ELECTRIC ISLEGP.APH — COPXBTCHt. (Received March 26, 10.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, March 26. Mr. Cook, Federal Premier, at a banquet at Wangaratta, referring to tho reliance upon the Japanese treaty for the peace of the Pacific, said that under treaty obligations with a nation whoso people they might not admit to their shores they must at all cost defend the “'White Australia” policy. He believed tho time was ripe for the development of naval defence. Ho would like to. see Canada and South Africa at a round table conference as well as Australia and New Zealand. Tho latter so far had kept the idea of contributing to the strength of the Imperial navy; on the other hand, Australia had begun to develop her own navy. He hoped Mr. Massey’s latest speech was indicative of the fm-i.ng in New Zealand, and that thev would soon be able to welcome the Dominion in th<S compact.
