MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

A PETITION AT CHRISTCHURCH

Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH; May 2. An election petition signed by J. M'Gomhs and five other electors, of the Linwood “Ward was lodged to-day with ' the stipendiary magistrate. .Petitioners, after sotting forth the names of tlio candidates and the result of theelection, pray that it may bo determined that Id. G. Sullivan was duly elected and ought to have been so,declared. IN A STATE SCHOOL. WANGANUI, May 1. ■ In connection with yesterday. J s municipal elections, the boys and giris in. the upper standards of the Avenue School were given a practical lesson in citizenship in the shape of a mock election, on the same issues _ and with tho same candidates as their fathers and mothers wore voting in earnest upon in the tow,n._ ■The result certainly showed that the young folk took more than a tittle interest in public affairs, for the Mayoral candidates were placed in -exactly the same order as in the genuine election. while, of tho twelve successful candidates for the' Borough Council. the youngsters “elected” cloven. There was a slight change in the personnel of the Harbour Board, and this was also reflected in the school voting, where tho result was the selecting of tho tho same candidates as in town. Throe out of four successful candidates for the Hospital Board were chosen, one of tho lady members being ‘‘turned down.” Though Saturday is tho weekly holiday for the schools, tho youthful voters had evidently closely followed and been impressed by tho .arguments of tho Thursday party, for they chose the latter day by a five to one majority. Perhaps, in the future, this may . prove a fairly accurate way of forecasting the results of polls. It seems to reflect tho “talk at home,” and a poll, taken in any big school beforo an election, would probably not be a bad indieaticdri of what would happen, on:, the actual voting day. PATEA. The voting for tho Mayoralty was as 1 follows:—La-rcombe 201, Hr. Simmons 150. The elected councillors were:—H. 0. Clarke, B. T. Bennett, P. W. Grainger, A. T. Christenson, k\ ilaniiibottoin, J. P, Egan, C. 11. Honeylieid, L. May, and A. "V/- Gunn. Eor the Harbour Board E. TV.’ Grainger and H. G. Dickie were ■elected.
