A SCHEME SUGGESTED.

FOR BACTERIOLOGICAL RESEARCH. Per Press Association. 1 a AYELLINGTON, April 29. At a special meeting of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, called by the Inspector-General of Hospitals (Dr. Valintino) to-day, an important proposal was made by tho Health Department iu regard to tho decision of tho board to engage a bacteriologist for the hospital. Dr. Valintino said that ,the matter proposed t-o ! put before tho board was an important one. . Ho believed that tho medical superintendent (Dr. Hardwick Smith) had been instructed to engage a bacteriologist in London. The proposal which he had to make was that Dr. Hurley (Government Bacteriologist at Wellington) should ho apixiiutcd bacteriologist to tho Hospital Board, together with Ids staff. .The total salaries of the bacteriological staff would amount to £1 foil per annum, half of which would, he paid by the Government and half by tho Hospital Board. Tho board would retain all fees, which would amount to about £2OO. The department would hand over its present equipment, so that instead of having two laboratories there - would bo one, thoroughly np-to-dato in every respect. If tin's arrangement was agreed to. a similar arrangement would 'be made with other centres: The department would have the use of the pathological block at the hospital, and the hoard would he able to call on the servircs-of Dr. Malcgill (Government Pathologist). The Government would require- to occupy only about two days ner mouth [or the manufacture of vaccines.
