SHEEP DOG TRIALS.

THE AWAKING MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Awakirio Collie Club took place cm Mr. W. D. Thomson’s farm on April 8 ana 10. A considerable number of competitors from Taranaki took part, Mr. J. Hunter, of Hawera, taking the chief events of the first day, his dogs doing excellent work, and reflected great credit on their owner. Mr. Hunter also secured the gold medal donated by W . u. Thomson, Esq., for the dog scoring most points in the No. 1 class. In class 2 Mr. Hunter again scored heavily, winning from eleven other competitors. The morning of the second day (Juesdav) was heralded by a terrific downpour, which continued until a late hour. The committee were compelled to postpone the remaining trials until W ednesday, which happily turned out brilliantIv fine. Proceedings opened with the Huntaway, Class 3, in which Mr S H. Lett’s dog (Guile) showed up brilliantly, being successful against nineteen competitors. In class 4 Mr. Lett s Guile again scored against twenty competitors, and by winning classes 3 and 4 Mr. Lett wins Messrs. Harrison Bros, cup (value £lO 10s). The special prizes were allotted ns follow: Gold medal, donated by W. D. Thomson, Esq., Mr, J. Hunter s Wobbler, 27 points; gold medal, donated bv B. R. Robinson, Esq., Mr. S. H. Lett’s Guile, 17 points; silver cup, donated bv Messrs. Harrison Bros., Mr. S. H. Lett’s Quito, 39 points. Mr. Muir, of Mangaweka, officiated as judge, and his decisions were prompt and wore received with approval by all competitors, while the arduous duties of Secretary wore carried out by Mr. E. A. On Easter Monday evening a concert was held in the town hall, and was attended by a large audience, whose applause called for encoras to every turn. The following ladies and gentlemen contributed to the programme; Messrs. Perston, Perkins, Preston, M’Neice, Bookie, Stratton, Webster, R. F. Batley, lorns, Batchelor, Bigg, Paynter, and Brewer, Misses Badlcy, Maddem, Walsh and Hoult, and Mrs. M'Neice. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. M'Neice. On Wednesday the Collie Club ball was held. The'hall was tastefully decorated, and the arrangements reflect great credit on all who assisted, especially the ladies who were responsible for the comfort of the inner man. Music was supplied by an orchestra consisting of Mrs. M'Neice, Messrs. Batchelor, Jones, Leech and Preston. Enjoyable extras were played by Misses Badley, Walsh, Maddern and Rattenbury, while the attendant duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Messrs. Cowan and M'Cormick. On Thursday evening a juvenile ball was held, and attended by a largo number of children, whoso smiling faces showed that for a time they were in Arcadia.
