ENTERTAINMENTS.

ROYAL PICTURES.

Last night the Theatre Royal was again well patronised to witness the screening of the current programme which opened with the ever Dopular Australian Gazette showing our 1 nmc Minister, the Hon. Thos. Mackenzie, and Maori members of the Legislation, was heartily applauded. “The Kings Ransom,” an historical drama by Pathe Freres with an exceptionally strong cast proved very interesting. An Innocent Burglar with Maurice Costello, the Vitagraph’s favourite in the leading part is responsible for many outbursts of laughter. The Nordisk star “A Great Moment” received a royal reception. This picture opens brightly in a picturesque Norwegian home, where the pretty servant is seen tflirtihg with this coachman. Many thrilling scenes pass before “The Great Moment” when the mother sacrifices her life for that of her child; the fire scene is realistic. To-night is positively the last opportunity of witnessing this programme of pictorial gems. Tomorrow a complete change will be submitted. EMPIRE PICTURE PALACE. The second screening of the current programme attracted a good audience to the Empire last evening, the films submitted being well up to the Empire standard for diversity and quality of photography. The Edison drama “Wage and Wage Earner” is a mostlavish production; the interior settings are alone werth seeing, and the dramatic story is powerful, well cast, and the principals exceptionally pleasing in their work. The full programme will be repeated to-night, when “Pinoccbio” will be replaced with a number of fresh subjects. To-morrow night another “star” attraction will be presented in the form of the great dramatic play “The Bells.” Playgoers will remember this drama as one made famous by the great actor. Sir Henry Irving. The audience will miss nothing Jn the picture production, as the Empire management has engaged # Mr. Alf. Boothman, who will add the necessary realism by a recital of the story. SKATING. Judging from the amount of interest taken in the opening of the Glideaway Rink on Thursday, the skating season will he a most successful one. The graceful and exercising sport promises to bo very popular this year as last, and learners will do well to practise from the start. The rink opens at 2.30 ou Thursday afternoon.
