Captain Scott states that ViceAdmiral Peary had not started to prepare for an Antarctic expedition until ho received an assurance that ~io British welcomed friendly rivalry. Captain Scott is arranging for cooperation with the American expedition as regards meteorological and magnetic matters. Ho considers the Americans are taking a longer route, but possibly an easier one. Present knowledge suggests a. gradual slope from the Polo to Weddell Sea. The main difficulty will bo in finding a suitable wintering spot. Captain Bartlett, aboard the Roosevelt, on September 1, and coals finally at Punta Arenas in December. The Antarctic night will bo spent near the 80th parallel. The expedition relies on dogs, including six which were sent to the North Pole. Captain Scott lias collected £32,000, enough for the ship and outfit. Ho is seeking 1 to raise a further £BOOO in Britain for salaries, and a further sum in Australia and New Zealand. Ho already has over 7000 applications Imposts in the expedition, and they are still pouring in. ,
