CRIMINAL BANKRUPTCY.

PALMERSTON, N., Sept. 10. At the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr. Justice Chapman, Thomas Gleeson was charged with committing a breach of the Bankruptcy Act by incurring debts without any ; reasonable ground of expectation of paying. The Deputy Official Assignee produced the bankrupt's books, revealed a bad state of affairs. The, jury returned a verdict of guilty,, with a recommendation to mercy on the grounds of accused's inexperience. Sentence was deferred. Sept. 11. Thomas Gleeson; of Rongotea, who was found guilty at the Supreme Court of a breach of the Bankruptcy Act, was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment- without hard labour. In refusing ;6robiition,; Judge Chapman said the Legislature intended that in a case like the present one the . accused should be punished with imprisonment. He expressed- regret at hay-, ing to send to prison a yotfng man of presumably good character, but he could not set at nought the provisions of the Legislature^
