THE AMERICAN FLEET'S INTENTIONS:

PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT'S STATE-

MENT.

(Received July 20, 8 a.m.)

NEW YORK, July 19.

The New York World says President Roosevelt states that he has given no order to the Navy Board to. send a battleship fleet to the Pacific, and he is unaware that the Board has issued any such order. The fleet will proceed on a cruise early in the fall for the purpose of engaging in manoeuvres. It may go to the Pacific, but its destination is not yet determined. These plans have absolutely no significance in regard to the Japanese question, which President Roosevelt does not consider serious.

The World expresses the belief that President Roosevelt will not consent to send the fteet to tho Western coast, and declares that the Jingo demonstration is finished. . The paper attributes the agitation to "ridiculous Fourth of July bunkum," talked by Mr.Metcalf, Secretary to the Navy, and adds that there are some signs that Calif ornians are beginning to regret the campaign and are trying to appease ill-feeling.
