FATAL ACCIDENT.

MR. J. J.LAWSON KNOCKED OFF THE TRAIN. . , fPER PRESS- ASSOCIATION. | Palmerston North, July 2.— Mr J. J. Lawson, resident engineer at Wanganui, of the Taranaki-Napier section of the railway, was knocked off the train this afternoon, while crossing the Pohangina bridge, near Ashurst. He fell into the river and was drowned . It appears he was leaning over the platform of the train to ascertain the amount of damage done to the bridge by the late floods, when hia head came m contact with one of the iron girders. The force of the blow knocked him off the train into the river below. Two men engaged effecting repairs to the bridge saw the body falling, and jumped into the river. They endeavored to find the bodjj by following the blood mark?, which discoloured the river. The men and others searched until darkj but their efforts were fruitless. Deceased was 38 years of age, and unmarried. He was a son of Mr Lawson, Official Assignee at Auckland.
